Lipomas are benign growths of fatty tissue that slowly develops under the skin. They are generally painless, movable and soft to touch. Lipomas mostly occur between the ages of 40-60 years and are slightly more common in males than females. They are most commonly found on upper back, shoulders, arms, neck and upper thighs. In very rare cases, they can also form in the internal organs, bones or muscles. For example, a person with lipoma on or near the bowels may experience nausea, vomiting and constipation. Similarly, lipomas in the gastro-intestinal tract can cause bleeding and ulceration. A lipoma can only be painful if it compresses the nerves underneath the skin. The exact cause of lipoma is not known, but it is believed that it usually is more common in people who have a family history of lipoma. Other risk factors include obesity, high cholesterol level, diabetes, liver diseases and glucose intolerance. Usually people have single lipomas in the body, however, few people have a number of lipomas. Lipomatosis is a hereditary condition in which multiple lipomas are present on the body. Most of the lipomas are less than 5 cm in size. However, in rare cases, they can grow into ‘giant lipomas’, which are between 10 to 20 cm in size. Generally lipomas are made up of fat tissues, however there can be some variations as below:
Angiolipomas: fat plus blood vessels.
Fibrolipomas: fat plus fibrous tissue.
Hibernoma: brown fat instead of the normal white fat.
Myelolipoma: fat plus tissue that makes blood cells.
Pleomorphic lipomas: fat with cells of different shapes and sizes.
People with lipomas should immediately consult the doctor if:
the growth is increasing in size
is becoming painful
is becoming red or hot
turning into a hard or immovable lump.
